Writing Resources
"...you need to recognize story telling as an important element of your research..."
- Dr. John Hulland, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science (2024)
As scholars, we must communicate our research clearly and convincingly to effectively reach a large audience. One way to do this is by writing. Below are some resources that have helped me develop my writing skills.
"Marketing Ideas: How to Write Research Articles that Readers Understand and Cite" - Marketing scholars (Dr. Nooshin Warren, Dr. Matthew Farmer, Dr. Tianyu Gu, and Dr. Caleb Warren) provide an insightful article in the Journal of Marketing on how to reach a broader audience with your writing.
Write for the Journal of Marketing Research Scholarly Insights! The Journal of Marketing Research (JMR) teamed up with DocSIG to give doctoral students the opportunity to write about a recent JMR article by discussing it with the prestigious faculty who wrote it.
How I Wrote This - Dr. Brett Gordon and Dr. Karen Winterich have a great podcast where they interview authors of academic marketing articles to understand the process of publishing a paper and the difficulties involved.
The Academic Storyteller Blog - Dr. Timothy Pollock has a blog that is focused on topics related to academic writing (e.g., writing process, journal reviews, grant proposals). He also wrote an excellent book ("How to Use Storytelling in Your Academic Writing") that provides a detailed guide on academic writing.
Volunteer to review for conferences and journals! Reviewing is a good way to see the latest research and to better understand the review process so that you can improve your paper before submitting it to a conference/journal. Additionally, you provide an important service to the academic community and can include it on your CV.
The Journal of Marketing takes you through its review process and provides resources on how to write a great review.
This Nature article presents thoughtful directions on reviewing for junior researchers.Â
Conferences often seek reliable reviewers. This is an example of a past call for reviewers from the Academy of International Business.
Academic Editor - Dr. Michael Haenlein created this custom GPT, a "friendly editor for clear, precise academic texts with word count focus."
